After slaying some Broadway sing alongs with Lin Manuel Miranda, getting shirtless with The Red Hot Chili Peppers, and rapping with Adele, it was hard to imagine how James Corden could make Carpool Karaoke any better… Then the most recent episode happened. First Lady Of The United States (Flotus) and queen of perfect triceps Michelle Obama made an appearance in the passenger’s seat so the duo could cruise around the White House grounds while talking about the critical political issues of our day, like girls’ access to education, Snapchat, and Missy Elliot.
The epic White House tour began with some Stevie Wonder and some #RealTalk about leaving her sweet abode.
Of course, Michelle rocked out to “Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I’m Yours,” like a total pro. Although she admitted she doesn’t get to sit in the front seat of a car and listen to music that often. There are some downfalls of the job, apparently.
Then Corden had to ask the tough questions. “Are you not gonna miss twenty-four hour room service?” He wondered. He pointed out she can always order grilled cheese at 3 AM.
But the ever down-to-Earth Michelle is ready for the normal life. “I can make my own grilled cheese sandwich,” she said.
Since Michelle and Queen Bey are friends IRL, it was only appropriate to sing “Single Ladies.”
It goes without saying that she’s the coolest FLOTUS of all time. Can you imagine how cringey this would be with any other middle aged politician trying to prove their pop culture literacy?
The conversation took a turn towards more serious political issues— and Snapchat.
Michelle didn’t just appear on the show to make the White House cool again. She showed up in Corden’s car with the goal of raising awareness for the U.S. Government initiative Let Girls Learn, which is dedicated to helping girls break the cycle of poverty and build their communities through access to education.
“There are sixty-two million girls worldwide who aren’t in school for a variety of different reasons,” FLOTUS said. “My message to kids here is don’t take your eduction for granted.”
She’s even taking to Snapchat to document her trip to Liberia, Morocco, and Spain for the initiative.
Then Missy Elliot showed up in the backseat for a surprise cameo. And we’ve never seen so much greatness in one vehicle.
The three superstars sang “This Is For My Girls,” a charity single featuring Kelly Clarkson, Missy Elliott, Lea Michele, Janelle Monáe, Kelly Rowland, and Zendaya, among others. All proceeds from the song will be donated to Let Girls Learn.
More importantly, they also sang “Get Ur Freak On.” And they got really into it.
